The incident involved an Asian passenger whose luggage was flagged during routine screening after the inspection systems detected suspicious contents. Customs officers then conducted a detailed manual inspection.
During the search, officers discovered a concealed basket containing rare bears that had been illegally transported. Authorities later confirmed that the animals belonged to a protected endangered species covered by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
The passenger reportedly told investigators she had agreed to transport the suitcase in exchange for payment and expected another person to collect it upon arrival, highlighting a smuggling method in which travellers are unknowingly used as couriers.
The case was immediately referred to the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, where a veterinarian confirmed that the animals were dead and that they belonged to a rare protected species.
Khalid Ahmed said the case demonstrates the preparedness of customs inspection teams and the effectiveness of combining advanced scanning technologies with experienced personnel to detect concealed smuggling attempts.
The case was also referred to Dubai Police's Environmental Crimes Unit to complete the legal procedures in accordance with UAE law.
Dubai Customs reaffirmed its commitment to combating wildlife trafficking, protecting biodiversity, and strengthening inspection capabilities through advanced technology and ongoing staff training.
Officials also warned travellers against carrying unknown luggage or packages, noting that such practices can be exploited for illegal smuggling and may expose individuals to legal liability.
