Sharjah 24 – AFP: Monaco defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the 14th round of the French Ligue 1, handing Marseille a chance to top the standings. However, Marseille squandered the opportunity with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Toulouse.

Defensive solidity amid challenges

Monaco displayed defensive resilience after a turbulent period of three winless matches. The team played without Swiss defender Denis Zakaria, suspended from the previous game, and finished with ten men after German defender Thilo Kehrer received a straight red card in the 80th minute.

The victory marked PSG’s second league defeat following their loss to Marseille on September 22 and their third loss across all competitions this season after the defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Monaco boosts European hopes

Monaco returned to the race for European qualification, raising their points tally to 23. PSG remained at the top with 30 points, one ahead of Marseille, though Lens could overtake them if they defeat Angers on Sunday.

Match-winning goal

Japanese forward Takumi Minamino scored the only goal in the 65th minute with a low shot inside the box after a cross from Russian Aleksandr Golovin. Monaco fans also welcomed back Paul Pogba (86), who returned from a long suspension due to a doping scandal.

PSG defensive struggles

Paris Saint-Germain continue to struggle defensively, having conceded eight goals in their last five matches. Moroccan right-back Achraf Hakimi and Portuguese left-back Nuno Mendes were sidelined due to injury.

Spanish coach Luis Enrique admitted, "We undoubtedly played our worst match of the season." He noted that Monaco deserved to win despite having a similar number of chances and insisted, "I have no excuses."

Controversial moments

The match saw a reckless challenge by Senegalese player Lamine Camara on PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier's ankle, for which the referee issued only a yellow card. Enrique declined to comment further, saying, "You have to ask the person who made the decision."

PSG’s missed opportunities

Despite creating chances, especially in the first half, PSG’s response after conceding wasn’t enough to secure points, continuing a trend seen in several previous matches this season.

Marseille’s draw against Toulouse

Marseille, after a streak of three consecutive victories, failed to secure a fourth win. At the Stade Vélodrome, they fell behind to Brazilian Emerson (14), leveled through Igor Baixao (66), and regained the lead with Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (74). Substitute Santiago Hidalgo scored a late equalizer (90+2), leaving Toulouse with their fifth draw of the season and 17 points, while Marseille dropped points despite a strong fightback.
