Sharjah 24 – WAM: In response to severe flooding across several regions of Sri Lanka, the UAE has initiated urgent humanitarian operations, deploying specialised search-and-rescue teams and sending more than 20 tonnes of emergency relief supplies.

Teams mobilised to assist affected communities

Led by the Joint Operations Command, the mission includes humanitarian teams from the UAE Aid Agency, the Emirates Red Crescent Authority, and Abu Dhabi Civil Defence. These teams are reaching the hardest-hit communities to deliver immediate assistance, including food supplies, relief items, and essential shelter materials.

Support aligned with UAE’s humanitarian values

The UAE has swiftly provided a comprehensive package of emergency aid to support the Sri Lankan government’s efforts to address the devastating impact of the floods and landslides. The disaster has resulted in at least 355 deaths, affected over one million people, disrupted essential services, and caused widespread damage to homes across multiple districts.

Commitment to global relief efforts

This rapid intervention underscores the UAE’s commitment to helping disaster-affected populations, alleviating suffering, and supporting early recovery and stability. It reflects the nation’s broader mission to extend timely assistance to communities impacted by natural disasters worldwide.

Emirates Red Crescent highlights leadership in relief

Dr Hamdan bin Musallam Al Mazrouei, Chairman of the Emirates Red Crescent Authority, emphasized the UAE’s global leadership in humanitarian operations, noting the importance of rapid emergency response and deployment of search-and-rescue capabilities—most recently in Sri Lanka.

UAE Aid Agency affirms ongoing support

Dr Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, affirmed the UAE’s continued commitment to its international humanitarian responsibilities, stating that additional relief supplies and shelter materials will be sent to support affected families and accelerate Sri Lanka’s early recovery phase.
