Sharjah 24 – AFP: Russia has pledged "full support" for Venezuela amid ongoing US sanctions and a blockade of Venezuelan oil tankers in the Caribbean, according to statements from both governments.

Condemnation of US actions

During a phone call, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Venezuelan counterpart Yvan Gil condemned Washington's recent actions, including bombing alleged drug-trafficking boats, seizing two tankers, and pursuing a third vessel. The Russian foreign ministry said the ministers expressed “deep concern over the escalation of Washington’s actions,” citing potential regional consequences and threats to international shipping.

Coordination on international stage

Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s solidarity with Venezuela, pledging continued bilateral cooperation and coordination at international forums, particularly at the UN, to ensure respect for state sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs.

UN Security Council meeting

The UN Security Council is set to meet to discuss the escalating tensions between Venezuela and the United States, following a request from Caracas backed by Russia and China.

Background of US measures

Since September, US forces have conducted strikes on vessels accused of drug trafficking in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, resulting in over 100 deaths, including civilians. On December 16, US President Donald Trump announced a blockade of sanctioned oil vessels heading to and from Venezuela, citing allegations that oil revenues are being used to fund drug-related crimes and human trafficking.

Moscow’s support

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Gil said Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow’s full support for Caracas in facing these hostilities and violations of international law.
