Sharjah24-AFP: Football’s world governing body FIFA announced on Wednesday that it had received more than 500 million ticket requests for this year’s World Cup, despite mounting criticism of high ticket prices.

In a statement, FIFA said that applications for the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, were submitted by fans from all 211 member nations and territories. The ticket application window for the lottery phase closed on Tuesday, and applicants will be notified of the outcomes no earlier than 5 February.

Strong interest beyond host nations

Outside the three host countries, the highest demand came from supporters in Germany, England, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Colombia. FIFA revealed that the most requested match was Colombia’s group-stage clash with Portugal in Miami on June 27, followed by Mexico’s match against South Korea in Guadalajara on June 18, and the World Cup final in New Jersey on July 19.

Pricing concerns persist

FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the demand as a “global statement”, while fan groups continued to criticise ticket prices as excessive.
