WFP urges immediate funding
The World Food Programme (WFP) alerted the international community that without an urgent injection of funds, it may be forced to halt critical food assistance, putting millions at risk of starvation.
Critical situation confirmed by experts
Ross Smith, Director of the WFP’s Emergency Preparedness and Response Division, described the situation as critical. He noted that food security indicators and early warning systems, managed by the WFP and its partners, show that Somalia is on a trajectory similar to previous devastating food crises.
Millions at risk
According to UN data, around 4.4 million people, or one-quarter of Somalia’s population, are now facing acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or higher). Smith emphasized that urgent action is needed to reach the most vulnerable, most of whom are women and children, before the situation worsens.
