Sharjah 24: As part of its Ramadan activities, the Arab Cultural Club in Sharjah organised an art workshop titled “Calligraphy as a Painting” on Wednesday evening. The session was presented by Khalifa Al-Shimi, the club's exhibitions manager, and attracted artists and enthusiasts of Arabic calligraphy.

Exploring letters as artistic elements

The workshop focused on treating Arabic letters as independent formative elements. Al-Shimi shared his techniques for using space, color, and letter movement within modern compositions, merging traditional calligraphy with contemporary art. He explained how integrating letters into paintings transforms them from conventional calligraphy into calligraphic paintings, where the letter’s essence, proportions, and flexibility are preserved while interacting with colors and composition.

Al-Shimi illustrated this with examples, such as a painting using a verse by Al-Mutanabbi, where the introduction of the color red added a formative dimension. He also discussed abstracting letters, using elements like dots in Thuluth script, to create symbolic and visually expressive artworks.

Practical demonstrations and audience engagement

The session included live demonstrations of Al-Shimi’s work, detailing the artistic process from concept to completed composition. He also explained the tools, materials, and methods used to blend different calligraphic schools and styles. Attendees responded positively, gaining insight into the creative potential of Arabic letters as foundational artistic elements.

Promoting visual arts and calligraphy

This workshop is part of the Arab Cultural Club’s ongoing efforts to support the visual arts and encourage interest in Arabic calligraphy. Through such events, the club provides artists opportunities to exchange experiences, refine skills, and explore innovative approaches to traditional art forms.
