Sharjah24-AFP: Rescuers are searching for 27 crew members after a fishing boat sank off Taliabu Island in North Maluku early on Monday.

The vessel is believed to have gone down in rough weather, a day after leaving port. The skipper allegedly called the owner at 4am to say the boat had sunk and the crew had abandoned it for another.

Authorities have yet to locate either the crew or the vessel. Search efforts are ongoing.

Maritime accidents are common in Indonesia’s vast archipelago, where safety standards are uneven and weather conditions can be severe. Earlier this year, three Spanish tourists died when a boat sank in eastern Indonesia.
