Sharjah 24: The Arab Theatre Institute has inaugurated the first edition of the "His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Award for Arab Youth Theatre Excellence", aimed at supporting youth Arab theatre artists and recognising their contributions to the development of Arab culture and theatre. The award seeks to foster creativity, competitiveness, and global distinction in the Arab theatrical scene.

Initiative by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi

The award was launched in response to the initiative of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, who tasked the Arab Theatre Institute with establishing a platform to honour outstanding young Arab theatre talent.

Statement from the secretary general

Ismail Abdullah, Secretary General of the Arab Theatre Institute, said: “This generous gesture reinforces our commitment to the vital role of youth in shaping the present and future of theatre. We aim to make this award a source of hope and action, establishing it as an annual recognition for outstanding young practitioners.”

Eligibility and criteria

The award is open to Arab theatre artists aged 30 to 40, encompassing actors, writers, directors, designers, and theatre critics. For the inaugural edition, applications focused on three fields: writing, directing, and acting. Applicants were required to submit at least three documented works demonstrating originality, consistent activity, artistic contribution, and relevance to Arab society. Works violating human rights, intellectual property laws, or containing racist or derogatory content are disqualified.

Selection process

A judging panel will evaluate nominees based on:

  • Distinction and originality in their chosen field
  • Innovation in ideas, content, and artistic techniques
  • Critical and media impact of their work
  • Consistent production and contribution to theatre
  • Relevance of their work to Arab societies within local and broader humanistic contexts

Award timeline

Applications closed on August 6, 2026. Winners will be announced on November 6, 2026, with the awards presented at the 17th Arab Theatre Festival on January 16, 2027.

This award underscores the Arab Theatre Institute’s commitment to nurturing young talent and advancing the Arab theatre scene on a regional and global scale.
