Durant, who moved from Phoenix to Houston last year, received a mixed reception upon his return to Arizona, where he was booed by some Suns fans throughout a game that saw a fluctuating performance.
Phoenix desperately needed the win to keep its slim playoff hopes alive in the Western Conference.
The home team started the game perfectly, taking a 21-point lead in the first quarter against a stunned Rockets lineup.
But Houston rallied before outscoring Phoenix 38-21 in the fourth quarter, securing a victory that meant the Suns missed out on direct playoff qualification.
"They hit us hard at the start," Durant said. "I liked how we weathered the storm, stayed put, and took that first hit."
He added, "It was a great team win."
