After reaching the FA Cup semi-finals earlier this month for the first time since 1987, Leeds added another achievement by defeating Manchester United at their home ground for the first time since 1981, with a 2–1 win in Matchweek 32 of the English Premier League.
Manchester United had the chance to take a significant step toward securing a return to the UEFA Champions League by opening a 10-point gap over sixth-placed Chelsea, with six rounds remaining, following the London side’s 3–0 home defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.
However, Swiss forward Noah Okafor scored a brace to hand Leeds their first league win over United since September 2002, when they won 1–0 at Elland Road, and their first victory at Old Trafford since the top-flight days in 1981 (1–0).
The sending-off of Argentina’s Lisandro Martínez at the start of the second half contributed to manager Michael Carrick’s side being unable to mount a comeback, after trailing 2–0 at halftime. United thus suffered their seventh defeat of the season, while Leeds recorded only their eighth win, moving six points clear of the relegation zone.
United also failed to capitalise on Aston Villa’s 1–1 draw with Nottingham Forest on Sunday, remaining level on 55 points with Villa. However, Carrick’s side hold third place on goal difference ahead of “the Villans.”
