Sharjah 24 -AFP: The Mexican Football Federation has confirmed that former international defender and Barcelona and Monaco legend Rafael Márquez will take over as head coach of the Mexico national team following the 2026 World Cup.

Official announcement by Mexican Football Federation

The announcement was made by Duilio Davino, Director of National Teams, who stated that Márquez’s contract is already signed and that he will succeed the current technical setup after the tournament cycle.

Current role under Javier Aguirre

Márquez is currently serving as assistant coach for the national team and will continue in that role under Javier Aguirre, who is set to lead Mexico through the CONCACAF World Cup period until July 2026.

Goal set for 2030 World Cup

According to Davino, Márquez’s long-term objective will be to guide Mexico toward the 2030 World Cup, marking a clear transition into a new coaching era for the national team.

Legendary playing career

Nicknamed “The Caesar of Michoacán,” Márquez earned 147 caps for Mexico and played in five World Cups between 2002 and 2018, captaining the team in four of them. At club level, he won two UEFA Champions League titles with Barcelona, four La Liga championships, and a Ligue 1 title with Monaco.

Leadership reputation

Davino praised Márquez’s consistency and leadership, noting that his qualities as a coach mirror his discipline and influence as a player throughout his distinguished career.
