Sharjah 24: As part of the 11th Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial under the theme “Numerals”, organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs at Sharjah Department of Culture (SDC), an artistic workshop entitled “How to Write Numbers”, was held, on Monday, at Al Noor Mosque, at Khalid Lagoon.
Sharjah24: The workshop was moderated by calligrapher Ayman Ghazal, in the presence of a number of students and those interested in Arabic calligraphy, where he taught them innovative ways to write numbers, in an artistic and aesthetic style.

Ghazal introduced a number of the authentic Arabic calligraphy methods and decoration to be used to give an artistic touch to numbers. The workshop presented practical models, where participants applied what they learned themselves, which gave them the opportunity to explore their creative potential.

He explained, through practical models, that writing in Arabic calligraphy, whether for numbers or letters, follows an artistic style that depends on balance and precision. It must be subject to the factor of harmony between points and angles, and writing numbers differs according to the type of font used, as some of them may be decorated to be part of the artistic beauty of the text.

He hinted in the same context that numbers are elegant and straight in the "Naskh script". While in the "Thuluth script", numbers contain beautiful curves and decorations. Numbers must be consistent with the adjacent letters in terms of size and shape, which creates harmony between the text and numbers, so that the numbers do not appear strange within the textual context.

Ghazal stressed that writing numbers in Arabic calligraphy requires training and practice until they become perfect and consistent with the letters, which gives the written text its artistic value.

He allocated part of the workshop to allow students to apply what they have learned on their own, giving them the opportunity to explore their ability to write numbers.
