Sharjah 24: The Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD) launched its first annual "Kashta" winter camp, which began on December 8 and will continue until December 31.

The annual "Kashta" camp is dedicated to senior citizens aged 60 and above, specifically parents.

Enhancing the mental and physical health

Mariam Al Muhairi, Director of the Social Education Department, explained that the camp aims to enhance the mental and physical health of participating seniors, break their social isolation, and increase their social interaction with individuals and community institutions. It also provides an opportunity to learn new skills: manual, artistic, and cognitive. Furthermore, it aims to break the daily routine to revitalise their lives, develop cultural and heritage awareness for seniors and those participating in the accompanying activities, especially children, and offer activities suitable for the varying levels of physical activity among the participants.

Al Muhairi added that the "Kashta" camp provides an environment that combines comfort, activity, recreation, social interaction, relaxation, energy renewal, and the acquisition of skills and experiences for seniors. The camp programme is held at Al Suyoh Family Park – Cultural Forum. The programme includes several aspects, the first being the "physical aspect," which includes exercises that contribute to stimulating blood circulation, improving physical fitness, and strengthening joints and muscles, while taking into account individual differences. The health and physical capabilities of the elderly.

The “Kuttab”

Secondly, the "Kuttab" (traditional Quranic school) area, designed to enhance the spiritual, intellectual, and technical aspects of the senior citizen through simplified education and digital empowerment tailored to their interests and needs. This includes Quranic recitation classes, religious lectures, awareness and educational sessions, and technology programmes.

The "Macintosh" area

Thirdly, the "Macintosh" area, a creative space for art and craft workshops such as crocheting, making handmade accessories, pottery, handbag design, and more.

Finally, the "Kashta" area, representing the "recreational aspect" of the camp, offers cooking activities, outdoor gatherings, and recreational trips to parks, rest areas, farms, and other locations.

Note: The word "Kashta" in Gulf dialects means "a picnic in nature." It is used to describe a relaxing trip to the desert or open country, typically involving setting up tents, cooking over charcoal, drinking tea and coffee, and gathering with friends to share stories and conversations. Its Arabic equivalent is "nuzha" (picnic) or "exploratory trip."

In short, it is a social and cultural tradition in the Gulf, especially In winter, to change the daily routine and enjoy nature.
