OpenAI plans a voice-only smart device to redefine human tech use

Sharjah24-WAM: OpenAI is preparing to launch a new personal smart device that relies entirely on voice interaction, signalling a major shift from traditional screen-based technology towards more natural, conversational human–AI engagement.

The company revealed that it has merged several internal teams, including engineering, product, and research, to accelerate development of an advanced next-generation voice model. Over the past two months, these teams have worked closely to redesign OpenAI’s voice systems in preparation for the device’s launch, which is expected to debut within approximately one year.

From software to consumer devices

The upcoming product line is expected to include devices such as smart speakers without screens and voice-enabled glasses. These tools aim to reduce reliance on multiple screens that dominate users’ attention, offering instead high-quality, interactive voice experiences that handle daily tasks and communication seamlessly.

A new interaction paradigm

By introducing a voice-only device, OpenAI is positioning itself to move beyond its role as a software provider and into the consumer electronics space.
