Missed opportunity at the summit
With Manchester City dropping points in three consecutive draws over the past week, the door was open for Mikel Arteta’s side to tighten their grip on the title race. Instead, Arsenal could only extend their lead over City to six points after failing to score at home for the first time this season.
Flat contest despite big-game build-up
The Emirates crackled with anticipation before kick-off, but the clash between the defending champions and the apparent title favourites never truly ignited. Torrential rain and swirling winds caused by Storm Goretti made conditions difficult, contributing to a disjointed spectacle.
Liverpool’s near miss before the break
Although Liverpool spent much of the first half under pressure, they came closest to breaking the deadlock. A loose backpass from William Saliba left David Raya stranded, allowing Conor Bradley to attempt a lob that struck the underside of the crossbar.
Second-half shift in momentum
Liverpool controlled possession and territory after the restart, reversing the pattern of the opening period. However, their attacking threat was blunted by the absence of key forwards, with Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike injured and Mohamed Salah away at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Lack of cutting edge on both sides
Arsenal were rarely troubled, aside from the pace of Jeremie Frimpong, whose final delivery failed to match his dangerous runs. Dominik Szoboszlai came close with a dipping free-kick, while at the other end Viktor Gyokeres’ struggles continued as his open-play goal drought reached 10 games before he was substituted.
Late pressure but no breakthrough
Arteta turned to his bench, introducing Gabriel Jesus, Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Martinelli in search of a winner. Despite the changes, Arsenal managed their first shot on target of the second half only in stoppage time, when Jesus and Martinelli fired straight at Alisson Becker.
What the draw means
The stalemate leaves Arsenal still in control of the title race but rueing a missed chance to pull further clear. For Liverpool, the point extends their unbeaten run to 10 matches and moves them three points clear of Newcastle and Manchester United as they consolidate fourth place and their push for Champions League qualification.
