Jennifer Adler shows how photography drives environmental action

Sharjah 24: At the Xposure International Photography Festival, Dr Jennifer Adler articulated the role of photography in conveying environmental issues through emotional engagement, an aspect often overlooked in scientific discourse. While data and research are integral to effective messaging, they may lack the emotional impact necessary to drive action. Photographic imagery serves to establish a connection between individuals and the subjects depicted, fostering a sense of urgency that motivates behavioral change.

In an interview with “Sharjah 24,” Adler highlighted her extensive work on kelp forests and shared observations on the significant ecological changes occurring within these ecosystems.

She noted that the removal of sea otters from these environments has led to an overpopulation of sea stars, which prey on sea urchins. By capturing and disseminating images of these detrimental occurrences, Dr Adler aims to raise awareness of the alarming trend of kelp forest decline, thereby vividly representing the challenges facing these vital marine habitats.
