Tim Smith: Embrace failure and “Git Gud” in photography

February 03, 2026 / 10:09 PM
Sharjah 24: Tim Smith, a Canadian photographer, expressed his passion for discovering beauty in individuals and places often overlooked or easily dismissed. This perspective fosters deeper connections and a greater understanding of his subjects, as he conveyed during his compelling presentation titled “The Art of Making Mistakes and Embracing Your Weaknesses” at the 10th Xposure International Photography Festival.

In an interview with “Sharjah 24,” Smith emphasized that failure has been a significant influence throughout his career. He identified the pivotal moment as learning to embrace failure to learn, improve, and progress. Smith noted that he conducted numerous firsthand experiments and acknowledged that he made mistakes throughout the process. This approach has been instrumental in building his confidence and development as a photographer.

Smith also expressed his gratitude for the opportunities that Xposure provided to a photographer like himself, hailing from the remote prairies of North America. He highlighted the value of collaborating and exchanging ideas and experiences with fellow photographers, opportunities that are often limited in his region.
