He stressed that he is calm about the situation, noting that “everything is going well, and everything will be wonderful”, despite the recent wave of violence that has affected parts of the country.
Remarks made in Colombia
Speaking during an interview with Agence France-Presse in Barranquilla, northern Colombia, Infantino described himself as “very calm” regarding Mexico’s readiness and security arrangements.
These were his first public comments since violence erupted on Sunday across several regions of Mexico, including Guadalajara, which is scheduled to host four matches during the 2026 tournament.
Mexico offers safety guarantees
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum previously said the country is providing “full guarantees” for the safety of fans attending the World Cup.
She emphasised that there is “no risk” to supporters visiting the city in June for the four fixtures, adding that authorities have taken all necessary steps to ensure the security and safety of visitors.
The assurances follow a surge in violence triggered by the killing of a drug cartel leader known as “El Mencho” during a military operation, which raised concerns about regional security.
