Coach Álvaro Arbeloa’s side entered the game after a 2–1 defeat away to Osasuna in the previous round, a result that had enabled Barcelona to reclaim top spot just one week after surrendering it to Real Madrid.
Barcelona strengthened their position on Saturday with an emphatic 4–1 victory over Villarreal, temporarily extending their lead to four points. Madrid failed to narrow the gap, missing out on what would have been a ninth consecutive win over Getafe, who secured their first victory at their giant neighbours’ ground since February 2008.
Without injured top scorer Kylian Mbappé, currently in Paris receiving treatment for a knee sprain, Madrid dominated the opening stages. Vinícius Júnior had a clear chance when through on goal, but goalkeeper David Soria produced an excellent save (13).
Soria denied Arda Güler soon after (24), before Getafe stunned the hosts with their first shot on target.
Martín Satriano scored with a superb first-time volley from outside the box, beyond Thibaut Courtois (39).
Madrid nearly equalised before the break through a header by Aurélien Tchouaméni, but Soria again saved on the line (42), leaving the hosts trailing at half-time.
Madrid struggled to create chances after the interval, prompting Arbeloa to introduce Rodrygo Goes, Dani Carvajal and Dean Huijsen in a triple substitution (55).
Vinícius tried to chip Soria from the left, but the goalkeeper once again denied him (58).
For the first time, Soria misjudged a corner, but Antonio Rüdiger headed wide (76). Carvajal then squandered a golden chance at the far post with the goal open (79).
Madrid’s final opportunity fell to Franco Mastantuono, but Soria — the standout performer — made another save (90). Mastantuono did not finish the match, receiving a red card in stoppage time after speaking to the referee with his hand over his mouth, though the words were unclear.
Getafe held on for a memorable victory.
