Djokovic defeated Kovacevic 6–4, 1–6, 6–4 to secure his place in the next round of the prestigious tournament.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion needed more than two hours to overcome his 27-year-old opponent, currently ranked 72nd in the world, who displayed strong serving throughout the match.
Djokovic said: "I knew before the match that if he served well and picked the right angles, it would be difficult to break his serve."He added: "That’s exactly what happened. He served very well, except maybe one game in the first set and another at the end of the third set when he got a bit nervous and missed some first serves."
The Serbian star continued: "That gave me the opportunity to win, and I took advantage of it." After winning the first set, Djokovic, currently ranked world No. 3 and aged 38, struggled significantly in the second set. He appeared uncomfortable and concerned about his physical condition, particularly his right arm.
Djokovic missed two break-point opportunities when leading 2–1 in the deciding set, but ultimately sealed the victory at 5–4 thanks to solid defence and an error from Kovacevic.
The Serbian player, who has won the Indian Wells title five times, reaches the Round of 16 for the first time in nine years. He will face either defending champion Jack Draper of Britain or Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Australia’s sixth seed Alex de Minaur was eliminated after losing to Britain’s Cameron Norrie (29) in straight sets 6–4, 6–4.
