Sharjah 24 – AFP: Former Brazilian international Oscar has announced his retirement from football at the age of 34 due to heart problems, his club São Paulo confirmed on Saturday.

Career cut short by health issues

Oscar had been sidelined since late 2015 and was hospitalised for five days in November after collapsing during a routine medical examination. He was diagnosed with vasovagal syncope, a condition caused by sudden drops in blood pressure and heart rate, forcing him to end his career before his contract with São Paulo, which ran until 2027, could expire.

Club and international career highlights

The attacking midfielder played for Internacional (2010–2012), Chelsea (2012–2017), and Shanghai Port (2017–2024) before returning to São Paulo in 2025. Over his career, he scored 136 goals and provided 203 assists in 556 appearances for club teams. He also earned 48 caps for Brazil, scoring 12 goals, and was part of the squad for the 2014 World Cup hosted in Brazil.

Farewell message to fans

In a statement released by São Paulo, Oscar said, "I am ending my career here in São Paulo, a career that has taken me practically to all four corners of the world." He expressed gratitude to the club’s fans for their support throughout his career and during this challenging period.
