Sharjah24: German side Freiburg made history by reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League for the first time, after defeating Spanish hosts Celta Vigo 3-1 in the second leg of the quarter-finals.
Freiburg completed the tie with a 6-1 aggregate victory, having already secured a 3-0 win in the first leg. Goals from Igor Matanovic and a brace from Yuito Suzuki sealed the result in Vigo.
Semi-final clash
Freiburg will face Portuguese side Braga in the semi-finals, after Braga staged a comeback to beat Real Betis 4-2 away and advance on aggregate.
Strong campaign
The German side has built its European run on solid defence, conceding just seven goals in 12 matches, while its attacking strength proved decisive in the second leg against Celta Vigo.
In other matches, Aston Villa cruised past Bologna 4-0 to set up an all-English semi-final clash with Nottingham Forest, who edged Porto 1-0.
