World number one Jannik Sinner of Italy effortlessly reached the round of 16 of the Madrid Open tennis tournament with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Danish qualifier Elmer Møller. Meanwhile, American Coco Gauff, seeded third, overcame illness to also reach the same round.
In the men's Masters 1000 tournament, Sinner continued his quest to become the first player in history to win five consecutive titles at this level, extending his winning streak to 19 matches, a run that began in early March at Indian Wells. He has also achieved 24 consecutive wins at this level since the Paris Masters last October.
Seeking only his second Masters 1000 title on clay, following his Monte Carlo triumph this season, Sinner needed just 77 minutes to dispatch his world No. 169 opponent.
The 24-year-old Italian, a four-time Grand Slam champion, broke Muller's serve four times and lost his own serve only once, late in the first set. He will now face Britain's Cameron Norrie, who narrowly defeated Argentina's Thiago Agustín Tirante 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).
