Sharjah 24: Sharjah Sustainable City (SSC), the first sustainable master-planned residential community developed by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) in partnership with Diamond Developers, marked global Earth Day under the theme “Our People, Our Planet,” reaffirming its commitment to advancing social sustainability and community-led engagement.

As part of this initiative, the city hosted an experiential, hands-on workshop for its young residents, in collaboration with Cuddle Family, aimed at nurturing environmental awareness through meaningful, experience-led learning.

Children were invited to shape their own interpretation of the Earth

During the session, children were invited to shape their own interpretation of the Earth, adding trees, painting waterways, and imagining clean cities and thriving ecosystems. What began as a craft became a quiet lesson in stewardship, as every small design choice revealed how everyday actions can shape the planet's future.

Earth Day is a meaningful reminder that caring for our planet starts with the community

Commenting on the occasion, Majid AlSuwaidi, Director of Community at Sharjah Sustainable City said: “Earth Day is a meaningful reminder that caring for our planet starts with the community, especially with our younger generations. At Sharjah Sustainable City, we strive to create an environment where sustainability is experienced as part of everyday life. Through our collaboration with Cuddle Family, we were able to engage our youngest residents in a hands-on and joyful activity, allowing them to explore these values through creativity and play. When a child shapes the Earth with their own hands, they begin to understand their role in shaping its future. These small, interactive moments help nurture a lasting sense of responsibility, curiosity, and care within our community.”

Earth Day belongs to the children

Yuser AlAbachi, CEO and Creative Director at Cuddle Family, added: "Earth Day belongs to the children, because the planet they inherit will be shaped by the choices, we help them make today. At Cuddle Family, we believe children don't need to be told to love the Earth, they need to be invited into a relationship with it. Watching them build their own globes, draw the trees they want to see, and dream up cities full of life reminds us that environmental awareness starts with wonder. Partnering with Sharjah Sustainable City gave us the perfect canvas, a community that already lives what we teach. Together, we turned a workshop into a small act of hope."

The workshop wove storytelling, art, and environmental awareness into a single experience

Delivered in English integrated with Arabic, the workshop wove storytelling, art, and environmental awareness into a single experience - one designed to empower children to see themselves not just as learners, but as active protectors of the Earth. The initiative aligned with Shurooq’s efforts to create inspiring and enriching environments within residential communities such as Sharjah Sustainable City, supporting children's growth and sparking their imagination.

The event was part of a wider programme led by Sharjah Sustainable City, which includes regular sustainability-related workshops and community activities for residents. It reflects the city's broader commitment to community wellbeing and the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land). As the community continues to nurture the next generation of environmental stewards, every tree drawn and every globe-shaped artwork created by young hands becomes a quiet promise to the planet.
