The department stated that the initiative supports the Sharjah government’s vision of improving quality of life through inclusive infrastructure that serves all members of society.
The approved standards include designated parking spaces near entrances, ramps with safe slopes not exceeding 1:14, and stairways fitted with non-slip handrails. Main entrances are designed to accommodate wheelchair users, while internal doors and corridors are widened to allow easier movement within buildings.
The department also uses non-slip flooring and equips restrooms with accessible facilities such as lower sinks and support rails. Lighting and indoor climate systems are designed to ensure comfort, maintaining temperatures between 23 and 26 degrees Celsius.
Additional measures include spacious lifts suitable for wheelchairs, emergency exits fitted with ramps, and audible and visual alarm systems to improve safety and security.
The department explained that engineering teams regularly review project designs to ensure compliance with accessibility standards and carry out field inspections at construction sites.
It added that the initiative forms part of a broader strategy aimed at creating an inclusive urban environment and strengthening Sharjah’s position as a city that prioritises people-friendly development.
